It’s been agreed upon from many, that our modern society should start to develop in different sustainable ways. Starting with fashion and the way that we are producing clothing, fabric, shoes etc. We as consumers often fail to realize whether the brands that we shop from, are doing more harm to the environment and society; rather than good. It is up to us to support and find fashion brands that are sustainable and support the safety of the environment. Starting with Bethany Williams fashion line.
who is bethany williams?
Bethany Williams is a young woman who has been working with foodbanks as well as with women’s rehab centres in order to gain ideas on how to create sustainable and original streetwear. (Alexander, 2019). She believes that environmental and social issues help to create new and innovative fashion designs, that will benefit both the society and environment. From the start, she was hesitant about pursuing a career in fashion; due to the amount of waste that is caused by the fashion industry. (Conlon, 2018). However, this inspired her to pursue fashion to a next level, by focussing more on sustainability and social consciousness in fashion. (Alexander, 2019). She has ensured that her entire fashion line is 100% recycled. (Chan, 2019). “I love taking something that is disregarded and making it into something beautiful with my hands. I didn’t feel that there was a brand that was young and vibrant with cool clothing but also one that was organic or recycled and was supporting people.” – Bethany Williams
Take a stand!
In order to create positive changes for the world, you must take a stand to spread awareness for change. In order to put her brand out in the society and make a positive change from it, Bethany started by putting the money she receives from the fashion line; into valuable causes. Each fashion season, she works with different charitable causes from drug rehabilitation centres to orphanages, to whom she donates a portion of the proceeds. (Alexander, 2019). This season, she will be donating 30% of profits to The Vauxhall food bank, continuing the cycle of exchange (Chan, 2019). To ensure that she is making a positive change to the environment, she uses recycled fabric and materials and she uses the charity services as inspiration to help bring her vision to life.
Change the face of fashion
Sustainable fashion is not just about producing clothes, shoes and accessories in environmentally and socio-economically sustainable manners, but also about more sustainable patterns of consumption and use. This helps to necessitate shifts in individual attitudes and behaviour towards social change and the environment.
“The word sustainable is such a broad term. If someone has income to spend on a luxury product, it’s about being more conscious about the product you’re buying, because those people have the power to change the high street. Knowing who’s making your garments is really important.” – Bethany Williams
