How body image impacts the fashion industry

Fashion is a piece of art that represents each individual and their uniqueness. While the body image is represented by the underweight fashion models who are seen in the fashion show, advertisement through any kind of media.

The unrealistic expectation of the fashion industry towards the body image is negatively affecting on society.

In addition, the negative effect of the body image leads the problem to the social value which is more and more young women are pursuing the unrealistic body size and shape. This impact has long-lasting, women often feel a sense of unsatisfied with their body shape, they desire the ideal type of body shape as skinny as the model has. This is because they observe more this kind of body image that is spread by the media, which it sorts up the high beauty standards to the majority of the population.

According to the Model Management website, the high fashion model must have tall and slim features. The requirement of becoming a model must be between 170cm to 180cm with dress size 4-6 US. Apparently, the portrayal of the models are aid to the fashion market to attract the customers, and have the impacts to the industry to produce the preferable size of clothing.

In the research from Business Insider, “A recent study from Dream Models, a modeling management agency, revealed that out of 3,000 models from leading agencies that were polled, a whopping 94% were at an unhealthy body mass index of less than 18.5”

In this case, the unhealthy rate of the model is very high and dangerous. It also indicates that the eating disorder is common in the modeling industry.
